Last week we held a Clubhouse chat on the value of an MBA. We had no idea what to expect in terms of attendance, but we were open to real conversation about where the MBA makes sense, where it doesn’t, and the different forms the degree can take. Chris Hamrick wrote a piece that went live the day before which you can see below, and that helped open up the discussion. We talked about what the experience and resources are really like, what it does for international students, how more flexible options increase access to the degree, and what people are really looking for out of the investment. It was an awesome conversation and we can’t wait for the next (March 6th at 4pm ET is looking good, reply if you’d be up for joining).
The MBA is somewhat of a lightning rod on the Internet… it’s not lost on anyone here that there is a certain perception of who pursues the MBA, and who the degree might be “for.” But (and you can ask any current MBA candidate or recent graduate…) that old image is proving to be less accurate over time. The goals and passions of MBA applicants are shifting. The demographics are slowly shifting. The paths in and out are shifting. Read our recent piece about the origins of the John R. Lewis Racial Justice Case Competition for a peek into how the conversations on business school campuses are shifting, too. We believe there is an opportunity to “rebrand” the MBA through our own work and by showcasing all of the incredible work and stories of our community, and we are excited to have you here.
While the next few weeks will be busy ramping up and letting testers into the site (!!!), we invite you to share your experiences and your expertise to help us continue to tell compelling stories in written pieces, knowledge shares (teach us about your work), interviews, op/eds, book reviews and more. And let’s get some events and discussions onto the calendar - reach out (don’t miss Loren Bass and her session on negotiations next week)!
Stay tuned for an email invitation to join the new site if you’ve signed up. Sending you the best vibes for the week ahead, and Happy Women’s History Month here in the US!
